Partially lift ban on car shelters/tempos for elderly and disabled in Montreal West Island

The Issue

“Imagine having a child in a wheelchair, getting him or her to an appointment on a winter day when there is ice everywhere. Your car is caked with ice, your driveway is a skating rink, even the wheelchair ramp is coated in ice. You have already been up for two hours helping your family member get ready and now you’re looking at another hour or more just so you can both enter the vehicle safely.

This is a struggle faced regularly by handicapped folks and their families, the elderly and the sick in West Island communities which do not allow temporary car shelters because they are unattractive. There are other cited reasons such that they are places for criminals to hide, which windowed tempos eliminate. Or that they can become unstable and fall down, which is a rare occurrence since they’re used in many other Canadian towns.

If you believe that your disabled or senior neighbors should be eligible to request accommodation for a tempo, please sign this petition. All that we’re asking is for those who can prove a need and can show proof of medical need be granted a permit allowing for reasonable accommodation.

Thank you kindly! Charlotte”—————————————————————

Charlotte Gibson is a Dollard-des-Ormeaux (DDO) resident who for almost 5 years has been trying to obtain an accommodation for a tempo at her home.
