I’m Tamping: make all sanitary products subject to rigorous chemical & heavy metal tests

The Issue

Recent studies have uncovered alarming findings: many tampons, a product used by 43% of people who menstruate, contain toxic heavy metals. It is shocking that these products were not rigorously tested for such contaminants before reaching consumers.

The FDA has stated that menstrual products are safe, but the lack of stringent testing for heavy metals and other harmful chemicals raises serious concerns. Reports from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) have highlighted the presence of hazardous chemicals in these products, underscoring the urgent need for change.

We are calling for a change in how these critical products are tested and regulated. The presence of heavy metals in sanitary products is unacceptable, and the potential health risks are unknown. Our demands are:

More rigorous testing of all sanitary products to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals.
Full transparency regarding the results of these tests, including the names of the companies whose products were tested.
Everyone deserves to know exactly what they are putting into their bodies, especially when it comes to products as intimate and essential as menstrual care. Help us ensure the safety and well-being of all people who menstruate by signing this petition.

As a woman who has been in and out of doctors’ offices and hospitals trying to figure out the root causes of my ill health, I question whether I have a medical condition or if the period products I’ve used have caused chronic toxic poisoning. My symptoms overlap significantly with those of heavy metal poisoning, raising serious concerns.
