I'm seeking Interest in a Majorette Dance Program and Marching Band

The Issue

I went to a 90's cookout at the Newtown Estates Gym. I saw so many young girls dancing at the party, and all I thought about was how a Majorette Dance program and Marching Band would benefit them. There is so much hidden talent amongst our students. A talent that has yet to be cultivated because our inner city High School does not have a place for them.

Newtown is plagued with generational cycles of poverty, substance abuse, mental illness,  incarceration, and teen pregnancy. Our students are different due to the unforseen circumstances that they are faced with everyday. As a single mother, and college graduate, born and raised in Newtown, I know the struggle first hand.

If Booker High School had a Majorette Dance Program and Marching band when I was in school, I definitely would have been in it.

Back in the 80's and 90's we had bands and dance groups like the Sarasota Slickers, Nasty Boys, and Sarasota Soul that marched in the Easter parade, but we have never had a program that provides an avenue for young girls and boys  to actually get scholarships. Majorette and Marching Bands are huge at Historically Black Colleges.

People come to the games to see the band! Its high-energy, synchronized, rhythmic dance that draw from ballet, jazz, modern dance, hip-hop and gymnastics is entertainment overload!

Sarasota is a city that is known for Culture, Art, and Entertainment. The perfect arena for a Majorette Dance Program and Marching Band.
