Stop Making India Breathe Toxic Air, Implement EPR for Responsible Disposal of Tyres

The Issue

I am being made to breathe toxic air every day. I live near a place where the illegal tyre burning is happening in the name of Pyrolysis, and me and my family are being forced to pay the price for the lack of a sustainable plan to discard old, used tyres in the country. Sign my petition so that we are one step closer to breathing cleaner air.

Have you ever wondered where our car/bike/cycle tyres go once they become unusable?

We assume that they are discarded without causing an additional burden to the environment, but the reality is far from it. Each year, India discards around 2,75,000 tyres. In the absence of an authorized agency to collect used tyres and hand them over for recycling, tyres usually end up in brick kilns or dump yards or illegal pyrolysis plants where they are burnt.

In most parts of the EU and USA, the responsibility of disposing used tyres lies with specific companies. We urgently need a similar action plan for India!

Earlier this year, the ministry had shared a draft notification for provisions under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for waste tyres and according to it, the obligation of 2024-25 would be 100% of new tyres manufactured/imported in 2022-23. If this draft notification is implemented, it will ensure that citizens like you and me are no longer forced to bear the burden of the waste created.

The responsibility of disposing tyres will lie with manufacturers and importers instead of consumers, it would help streamline the disposal process and violators will be held accountable.

All of us have witnessed and experienced the devastating impact of climate change around us. The time to act is now!

Join me by sharing this petition now, and urging the MoEFCC to urgently implement the Extended Producer Responsibility policy in India.
