Martin Kite started this petition to Huntingdonshire District Council

Please sign this petition to convince Huntingdonshire district council to reverse their decision to ban fishing at Eynesbury manor marina.

For many years young and old have been able to fish for free all year round at Eynesbury Manor marina from the Huntingdonshire District Council owned bank. There was at one time disabled access platforms for fishing from and even youth angling programs run by a local angling club. For some time there has been a number of complaints made by a group of residents of the Eynesbury Manor estate of anti social behaviour. Whilst it is not disputed that this area has suffered over many years from anti-social behaviour by way of large groups gathering, drinking, being generally loud and leaving large quantities of litter and even acts of arson. We feel that this has been unfairly attributed to the conduct of anglers. As a direct result of these unsubstantiated allegations Huntingdonshire District Council have decided without any public consultation to entirely ban fishing from this public space.

In light of recent campaigns by both the Environment Agency and the Angling Trust to encourage more young people into the sport (even providing some financial support in aid of that initiative) and not to mention the rapidly emerging mental health crisis as a result of the current Covid-19 restrictions, we feel that this is an ill-thought-out and short sighted decision to remove the right to fish for free. This is something that should be seen as a true asset to the local community. Due to the fact that all other stretches of the river in St, Neots and with any lakes in the area being club waters with annual membership fees Eynesbury Manor marina had been the only place in the town that low income families could take their children to fish for free. We feel that it should be put upon Huntingdonshire District Council  to be doing more to encourage ALL people but especially young people to spend more time outdoors, providing better access to activities and the resources available locally rather than removing them.

For this reason anglers and the wider community, if you have children or grandchildren that do or may in the future wish to fish in a safe place that is free and can be fished all year round then we would urge you to please sign this petition in the hope that we can convince Huntingdonshire District Council to reconsider and reverse this decision. This affects you, me, my children your children and even our grandchildren let’s make sure that fishing continues here for free well into the future.
