Human Rights For Prisoners Review

Human Rights For Prisoners Review
There are currently 16 men who are making a stand in New Zealands Waikeria Prison
THIS IS NOT A RIOT THIS IS A PROTEST.
This situation is indicative of a system that has been failing for generations.
This building they are being held in was built in 1911. 110 yrs old it is in poor condition there are years of reports to confirm these poor conditions
The most recent ombudsment report dated august 2020. 5months later and still these men have seen no change, despite numerous attempts of exhausted avenues.
INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY
Most of these men are being held for non violent charges
Remand unit these men have not yet been proven guilty for some, these are their first encounters with the law.
NO mental health help or any resources of social working while being in remand.
A few of these men are still being held in the remand unit yet are sentenced this is detrimental to their mental health as no resources are available in remand unit.
A human right is to have drinking water, this is not what these men are recieving there are years of reports that the water is not drinking quality. The water comes out of the tap and it is brown there are no facilities available for them to boil this water to ensure it is drinkable.
MENTAL VIOLENCE AGAINST PRISONERS
Hand cuffed with 4 guards each prisoner from cell to yard and yard to cell muscle restrictions.
Visits are cut short
(some families traveling 3plus hrs for a 1hour visit to be cut short)
Search harrasment to whanau and children going for visits including being searched more then twice while in the prison grounds (kids included and been made to wait in rain while searches are conducted) at front gate, at visitor carpark, at visits building.
No laundry, they wash their clothes in dirty shower water, and hang them on mildew ridden concrete floor to dry.
Bedding, clothes and towels not being washed for months.
No gym use for this particular unit
Medical attention concerning- every issue masked with painkillers
Withholding toilet paper for up to 4 days
Over cramped yards with single toilet single shower. Some men having to shower together due to limited time in yard.
Property form requests being denied
Property taking up to 3months to be approved
HOKAI RANGI strategy not being implemented when asked one individual in particular said he has been in there for 12months and not once has he seen this be implemented in their unit.
THIs NEEDS TO CHANGE!!
THIS IS NOT WHAT CITIZENS OF NEW ZEALAND SHOULD BE GOING THROUGH WE ARE NOT A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY!!
why are our prisons in third world conditions
There also has been reports of violence against some men who have already surrendered which has been from corrections we do not want this to happen to these men who are protesting.
WE DONT NEED TO ADD MORE INHUMAN WAYS TO GET THEM DOWN WE THE WHANAU AND IWI WILL HOLD CORRECTIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DEATHS
THIS IS A PROTEST NOT A RIOT
