WE DEMAND THAT BAYER-MONSANTO STOP USING BEE-KILLING PESTICIDES
The Issue
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Billions of bees are dying each year because of Monsanto's pesticide use.
WE DEMAND that Monsanto stop using pesticides that kill bees.
Pesticides
Pesticides were created to kill 'pests' and insects that ´harm` crops, but they have unintended consequences. Pesticides can wipe out entire species, even those that are not supposed to be targeted, this includes bees. The most common sign of bee poisoning is the appearance of excessive numbers of dead bees in front of the hives.
Glyphosate (the active ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup, since 1974) is arguably also one of the most contentious. It is rarely used on its own but combined with a variety of other chemicals such as surfactants which help glyphosate enter plant cells, and other additives that extend the product’s shelf life.
“Glyphosate – the most used pesticide ever – damages the good bacteria in honey bee guts, making them more prone to deadly infections. “ The Guardian, 2019
In Argentina, for example, the most widely used and dangerous agrochemicals are glyphosate herbicides, atrazine and paraquat (soy, corn, tobacco). Insecticides cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, fipronil and imidacloprid (vegetables, fruit trees, corn), and finally the fungicides benomyl and carbendazim (vegetables). Argentina uses 108 banned formulations, which are provided by Bayer-Monsanto, as well as Syngenta, Dow Agrosciences and Atanor.
"According to the International Pesticide Action Network (PAN), HHPs are chemicals that are endocrine disruptors, bioaccumulative, very persistent in water, soil or sediment, and toxic to aquatic organisms and bees.” Página 12, 2020.
Studies have shown that pesticides such as neonicotinoids (include imidacloprid, acetamiprid, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, and clothianidin) cause harm to bees by acting on postsynaptic nicotinic receptors. These receptors are located entirely in the central nervous system of insects. Glyphosate, manufactured by Monsanto, targets an enzyme only found in plants and bacteria.
However, a new study shows that glyphosate damages the microbiota that honey bees need to grow and to fight off pathogens. The findings show glyphosate, the most used agricultural chemical ever, may be contributing to the global decline in bees, along with the loss of habitat. The biggest impact of glyphosate on bees is the destruction of the wildflowers on which they depend.
In 2018, German pharmaceutical giant Bayer bought the US company Monsanto for an estimated $63 billion.
Why protect pollinators?
- In the most recent meeting of the Royal Geographical Society of London, the Earthwatch Institute declared bees the most important living species on this planet. This declaration is concerning because, according to wildlife scientists and experts, bees are on the endangered species list.
- Recent studies show a dramatic 90% decline in the bee population in the last few years. The main reasons for their dwindling numbers include deforestation, the use of pesticides and lack of flowers.
Bees are titled the most important being on earth because 70% of the world’s agriculture depends exclusively on bees. - They are responsible for the pollination of 7 out of 10 plant species in the world, which provide us with food and raw materials, in addition to regulating the climate, reducing pollutants in the air and water, and even forming barriers against natural phenomena.
- Bees range over many kilometres to collect nectar and pollen, making the honey they produce an excellent indicator of the pesticide pollution across their local landscape. Contamination rates were highest in North America with 86% of samples containing one or more neonicotinoids, followed by Asia (80%) and Europe (79%). It was lowest in South America at 57%. Almost half the samples contained a cocktail of the insecticides.
- Approximately one out of every four mouthfuls of food or drink that humans consume is made possible by pollination by bees.
Who are we?
Bee Save Movement is building a grassroots organization to protect some of the smallest beings we share this planet with and help solve the climate crisis by helping the bees survive. Billions of bees are dying each year due to pesticides and other causes including habitat loss, climate change, viruses, and decreased crop diversity. Veganism, a change to a plant-based food system and rewilding are a critical part of necessary actions for the bees and our future.
We are not looking for better welfare for bees, but rather to stop using them for our benefit altogether.
What you can do
- Please sign and share this petition to raise awareness of these important issues and to save the bees.
- Contact your local politicians and media and ask them to pressure Monsanto to stop using pesticides that kill bees.
- Go vegan today! Animal agriculture is a key source of pesticides. Honey is another industry that is harming the bees on a mass scale. By going vegan you'll also benefit by improving your body’s immunity against disease with healthful, plant-based meals as well as getting enough sleep and exercise.
