The Huffington Post Stands Against Sexual Assault... So Why Did They Print This Article?
On June 4, 2013, the Huffington Post, a loud voice in the fight against rape and sexual assault, featured an illustrated article detailing 8 ways a woman can destroy her man's penis:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/reductress/8-sex-positions-that-will_b_3381552.html
Suggestions include:
Coming home from work and punching your husband or boyfriend in the genitals to relieve stress, giving him a handjob and refusing to stop, as well as tying him to a bed and binding his penis with fishing line and leaving him there until his penis dies from lack of blood.
Why Has Nobody Noticed This Hypocrisy?
This cartoon has been publicly visible on the Huffington Post for nearly two years, and during that time, it seems nobody within that organization has determined it to be in bad taste or insensitive to survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse. That is unacceptable.
The Huffington Post routinely reminds us all about the importance of putting an end to rape culture, and that it is not okay to joke about or make light of rape or sexual abuse.
There is no excuse for a website so dedicated to defeating rape culture to have featured a cartoon making light of those very things, plus genital mutilation. Neither HuffPost nor the public would abide the same comic if the victim was a woman, regardless of the author's intentions.
Lend Your Voice!
Tell the Huffington Post there's never an appropriate context for making light of sexual assault, and ask them to remove the article and publicly apologize for running it.
Additional Thoughts:
This petition should NOT be construed as a call to limit anyone's freedom of speech. It isn't a call for legislative action. It is a complaint about the way the Huffington Post (and society in general) treats victims of sexual assault and rape differently based solely on their gender.
Our purpose is to move the Huffington Post to voluntarily remove the article in question and apologize for failing to consider how it could contribute to our culture's apparent disregard for the care of victims, particularly when those victims are adult males.
Everybody deserves to be treated with equal respect and care.
