Unblocking Sparknotes, Cliffsnotes, Shmoop, and similar sites from the School Filter

Our school's filter has often been described as a necessary evil, needed to stop students from looking at pornographic sites, drug sites, and distractions such as Facebook.

However, our school's decision to use the Lightspeed Systems filter to block sites used for academic endeavors, such as Sparknotes, Cliffsnotes, and Shmoop, is extremely unjustified. While some students may use these sites to avoid reading the book they are assigned, the vast majority use them to fill in the gaps and be able to look at explanations of important concepts from various novels.

Many teachers recommend using sites such as Sparknotes to help further understand the assigned books, and the sites are very helpful to our students.

The justification for school filters has always been to stop sites that cause either inappropriate behavior or a substantial disruption to the school day. Sparknotes and similar sites fulfill neither of these categories, and can instead be used to a great effect to further academic advancement.

Therefore, I petition Hudson High School, the Hudson City School District, Principal Wilch, and Superintendent Herman to immediately unblock the academic sites that are currently prohibited by the school filter.
