HSE: Consider Dance a Sport and Let it Count for a PE Credit
The Issue
As of now, dance is not considered a sport and does not count for PE Credits. Dance is definitely a sport. According to the Oxford dictionary, a sport is “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Dance involves so much physical exertion. Each week, the average dancer dances at least 12 hours-sometimes more. (The Ballet Blog) Dancers work just as hard as other athletes. With just 1 hour of dance, you can burn up to 520 calories! (TeenStarCompetition.co) Dance also takes skill. Dancers have to be flexible and have high stamina. They also have to be smart. Dancers every day have to memorize various combinations and dances. They have to have self-control and discipline. Dance builds muscle and agility. (goodmenproject.com)
Dancers can also compete. Dancers have to compete with others for different roles and parts in a performance. There are always lots of people who want a certain part, but in the end, only one person will get it. There are also competitions for dance such as YAGP, Bella Moxi, and ADC IBC. Dancers compete just like any other athlete.
Overall, dance definitely is a sport and should count for PE Credits. Dance is a highly competitive endeavor that meets all the requirements of a sport. Dancers work just as hard as any other athlete and are very skillful. Dance fulfills all the requirements to be counted for PE Credits. Please sign this petition if you think that dance should count as a sport!
