Save Mount Cara

The Issue

Mount Cara was opened over 30 years ago on lands donated by the Diocese od Cork and Ross and supported by the Daughters of Charity and Sisters of Mercy to provide shelter and care for elderly vulnerable individuals in a supportive environment.

It is located right next door to the Bishop's Palace just off Redemption Road.

Mount Cara is funded by resident’s fees, along with grant aid from Cork City Council and the HSE.

Mount Cara has 25 single bed rooms 15 which are currently occupied by residents. Our eldest resident turned 100 on the 9th of June.

On Friday 3rd of July staff and resident’s received the devastating news the Board of management took the decision to start winding down and close the facility. They stated reason's for closure was due to struggles that arose due to Covid19. Its evident to see that all staff handled the challenges faced by Covid19 immensely.

The Board made the decision themselves to shut. We are calling upon the HSE to step in and take over the running of the facility, in a statement made from HSE
the outlined in the Irish examiner,

"It is not possible for the HSE/CKCH to take over Mount Cara in its entirety as we understand that the building is not suitable for the type and level of residential care which is required into the future."

Our resident’s and their familes are devastated by this dreadful decision to move the current 15 resident’s of Mount Cara to other care facilities in the current during these daunting times. There is a definite need for care facilities like Mount Cara which are not fully blown nursing homes, for those who need lesser supports. It may be detrimental to social, mental, emotional and physical health to move individuals to more dependent situations then they need.
