Donald Hughes started this petition to Howard University Board of Trustees

While appearing on CNN's Cuomo Prime Time, Howard University Board of Trustees member Hilary Rosen in a discussion with Nina Turner, a Black woman, told her [Nina], "Don't use Martin Luther King against Joe Biden, you don't have that standing. I'm sorry, you don't."

After the segment, Hilary Rosen apologized to Nina Turner by doubling down and weaponized one of the most insidious, racist tropes against Nina and Black women broadly—angry black woman.

On air thurs I said my colleague @ninaturner didn’t have standing to use MLK Jr.That was wrong. I am sorry for saying those words. Pls no need to defend me and attack angry black women. They have standing. I always need to listen more than I talk. We rise together

This type of rhetoric is unacceptable and especially by a member of the Board of Trustees at one of our nation's most revered Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which is responsible for supporting the growth and development of Black women in this country.

Hilary Rosen's comments are unacceptable and underlie a type of thinking that should not be held by a member of the Howard University Board of Trustees, which is responsible for identifying standards of academic excellence and creating policies for the University. Hilary Rosen has acted in a way that brings discredit to the University and Board of Trustees and she must resign or be removed from the Board of Trustees immediately.

According to the Howard University Bylaws of the Board of Trustees, here's how a member can be removed:

SECTION 9: Removal of Board Members

(a) Removal of Trustees -- Any Trustee may be removed by a majority vote of the Board, a 32 quorum being present, at any meeting of the Board, upon certification by either the:

  • (i) Governance Committee that the Trustee proposed to be removed has acted in a way that is: either an actual or apparent violation of the Statement of Responsibilities of the Board; inconsistent with the fiduciary role of a trustee; or has otherwise acted in a way to bring discredit to the University or Board;
