Accept/Request donations for basic pet food and offer to needy

The Issue

With numbers of both homeless humans, and numbers of abandoned or "wild" four-legged friends rising considerably, we need to start considering other options besides a bag of food to one, and the pound, then to start offering basic pet food to homeless/ poverty level people and families Euthanasia for the other. People that are on the streets, and even people facing that as a possibility, should be able to find comfort with something. Many though barely have enough to feed themselves or their families so the idea of sparing anything for an animal is out of the question. I think that small amounts of pet food, (and hopefully more options like spay/neutering, basic animal necessities, low-cost/no-cost pet vaccines for stray rescues, etc.) should become a part of the normal procedure. Even just a quick mention while speaking to someone could show them that even if they have ended up alone and on the streets, that at least when the stray cat or dog they see every single day passes by once again hoping to find some kind of scraps to eat, they can finally feel like they were able to make a difference and even possibly make a companion by having a bit of food to offer that animal. We as a society don't like to watch our homeless and poverty level peers starve, so how is it when can sit idly by while lonely/lost/forgotten/abandoned/abused animals starve every single day. Oh except for the few that happen to be picked up by the wonderful SPCA, but that ending is still grim. Lets make a difference in the lives of even the smallest creatures now, so that in the future maybe people wont have to turn their backs on that little stray that just wandered up, instead of looking the other way and these helpless creatures just continuing to follow their instincts of survival and procreating at what's starting to become astonishing levels.

The saddest part of all of it, is that we as a major city in the state of Texas, are the only major hub to not have a pet food bank set up. What does that say about our city and our society here in Houston?
