Housing Crisis Nova Scotia

Housing Crisis Nova Scotia
The Issue
Housing is a Human Right!
Rents have risen 68% since 2015, far outpacing wages. The average one-bedroom in Halifax now costs $1,770, and 71% of students spend more than 30% of their income on rent. Many are skipping groceries just to stay housed.
Meanwhile, landlords are exploiting fixed-term lease loopholes to bypass rent caps and raise rents as high as they want. Predatory renovictions are pushing tenants out under the guise of “upgrades.” Rent caps are temporary and arbitrary — there’s no stability for renters.
We’re calling on Premier Tim Houston and Minister John Lohr to act now and adopt three common-sense reforms:
Close the Fixed-Term Lease Loophole — make leases automatically renew month-to-month unless there’s a legitimate reason not to.
Stop Predatory Renovictions — require proof of necessity and relocation support for displaced tenants.
Adopt Permanent Rent Control Linked to Inflation (CPI) — ensure rents rise fairly, not exploitatively.
Other provinces like B.C. and Ontario have already done it. Nova Scotia cannot afford to fall further behind.
Sign this petition to demand housing stability for students, workers, and families across the province.
