Safe Water for First Nations

The Issue

Awareness on the water crisis in developing countries has come to light within the past few years; however, many Canadians do not realize that this crisis hits a lot closer to home, then we know. The First Nations Indigenous peoples in Canada continue to face inequality and poverty, more specifically, water poverty. Canada is one of the wealthiest countries in fresh water, yet the First Nations communities are deprived of that fundamental human right without reason. 73% of First Nations’ water systems are at high or medium risk of contamination (The Council Of Canadians, Safe Water for First Nation), which is if they even have running water or indoor plumbing. Many children are growing up drinking and bathing in unsafe water, which could potentially cause skin, eyes, or nose irritation. At one point, the level of contamination was so high that it included coliform, E. coli, cancer-causing Trihalomethane, and uranium. There have been countless promises to take action on this epidemic, however, so little has been done. The United Nations recognized water as a human right in 2010, but it remains a luxury to the oppressed. The Canadian government needs to put more money towards making sure First Nations communities have access to safe and clean water, in order to eliminate water advisories. The foundation of all life is water, and this social injustice must be put to an end.
