Hotels: Stop Tucking in Blankets Under the Mattress!
The Issue
Dear Hotel Chains and Hospitality Leaders,
We, the undersigned, are writing to address a common yet often overlooked inconvenience experienced by many hotel guests: tightly tucked-in blankets under the mattress. This practice is uncomfortable for most guests (thousands of posts on Reddit prove it) and creates unnecessary hassle and frustration. When guests untuck the blanket, the sheet often becomes untucked as well, turning the entire bed into a mess. While tightly tucked blankets may look neat when guests enter the room, they are impractical in use and cause significant discomfort.
Our Request:
- Survey Feedback: Conduct a survey to gather feedback on this specific issue. It seems no one has ever asked guests about this.
- Default Option: Please stop tucking in blankets under the mattress by default.
- Guest Preferences: Ask guests about their bed-making preferences during booking. This simple question can significantly enhance the comfort of their stay.
Why This Matters:
- Widespread Discontent: The issue is widely discussed on platforms like Reddit and YouTube, where posts and videos on the topic receive hundreds of votes and comments. This demonstrates that it is a common frustration among hotel guests.
- Employee Insights: Hotel employees often report that they don't understand the reason for this practice and only do it because they were instructed to. The common belief is that it's done for appearance's sake.
- Regional Irrelevance: Some suggest that tightly tucked blankets prevent bugs, snakes, and scorpions from hiding under the blanket. While this might be relevant in specific regions, it is absolutely irrelevant for most areas or hotels.
- Misunderstanding the Practice: Some guests think they are supposed to sleep without untucking the blankets, like in an envelope, and are frustrated trying to fit inside.
- Inconvenience and Time Waste: Tightly tucked blankets waste guests' time as they have to untuck the blankets before sleeping.
- Major Issue: When untucking the blanket, the main sheet often comes untucked too, forcing guests to either lift the heavy mattress to re-tuck the sheet or sleep on an unfixed, loosened sheet. This greatly detracts from the comfort and relaxation expected during a hotel stay.
- Addressing Common Retorts: Some people argue that guests can just untuck the blankets and not be lazy. However, the problem is that untucking the blanket usually leads to untucking the sheet as well, creating more inconvenience.

Many people dislike this practice but assume it's their personal issue because it is standard across hotels. Hotels don’t ask guests about it because they don’t see complaints. Why are there no complaints? Because guests don't associate this problem with a specific hotel, therefore they don't mention it in reviews about the hotel. Let's finally acknowledge that it's not a feature—it's a bug!
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to seeing positive changes in the hospitality industry.
Sincerely,
Rad
