Hazard Pay for Nurses Throughout the USA
The Issue
With Covid-19 Sweeping across our nation, we are in unprecedented times that will affect millions of people throughout our country. We have already seen this with the world economy in constant turmoil with no clear end to that downfall. With that being said, there is still one group of people that are putting their lives at risk every single day, while others have the opportunity to benefit from it greatly. Of course I am talking about the nurses and health care professionals that go to work every single day. That is why during this state of National Emergency/Crisis they should be receiving hazard pay of at least time-and-a-half.
Just last week the PA Governor signed a mandate shutting down what is deemed all non-essential/non-live saving businesses. This same mandate has already begun to trickle through other states as well. Ultimately this has the potential to put millions in this country out of work. While I sit and wait not knowing how this will end, my wife puts her health and safety at risk every single day. The most I can do at this point is fight for her and all others that are tasked with the same responsibilities. The improved pay of time-and-a-half has the potential to offset some of the problems caused for those no longer receiving a pay check.
Regardless of how you may view our current healthcare system in this country, the fact remains we are set up in a FOR PROFIT system. While Covid-19 testing may be "Free", are hospitals going to pay for the ones that need life saving medication? Are they going to waive the exorbitant costs that families and individuals will accrue from possibly spending days or weeks in the hospitals? CEO's and top level executives already make 6 and 7 figure salaries, not to mention yearly bonuses. The influx of money that will inevitably be put into the hospitals is only going to make them more well-off than before.
This may not be a situation that directly affects yourself, but you could be helping your friends, your neighbors, family members, or other loved ones during this difficult time. While myself and millions more are being told to stay home, we are telling just as many to go to work and risk their own safety. I implore everyone that sees this to please sign and pass it on.
