Hooper City to Reevaluate Land Use for Residential Development Over Rehabilitation Center

The Issue

I live just a few blocks away from a site currently being proposed for a new drug rehabilitation center. This location is also alarmingly close to our local elementary school. Many of my friends, family, and acquaintances also reside near this site, and we are growing increasingly concerned about the potential risks it poses to our community's quality of life and to the safety of our children.

Hooper City, we suggest that you reevaluate this decision and seriously consider whether this land could be put to better use. We propose that instead of a rehab center, this land is opened in the general plan for a possible 1/2 acre plus residential subdivision.

As per the US Census Bureau, Hooper City's population has been growing steadily over the years, indicating a clear demand for more housing (US Census Bureau, 2016). By developing a residential subdivision, we can meet this demand while also enhancing our community's overall cohesion and growth, rather than introducing potential disruptions and safety issues.

Moreover, the proposed rehab facility may not only have safety implications but could also effect property values. According to a study conducted by the Appraisal Institute, property values can be negatively impacted by nearby social service facilities, such as treatment centers (Appraisal Institute, 2014). With the majority of Hooper City's residents being homeowners, this potential depreciation of property values is a significant concern.

Our community deserves a say in shaping its future growth. Let’s make Hooper City a place of community and tranquility, not one that hosts potential disruptions in its heart. We, therefore, respectfully urge you, Hooper City officials, to prioritize our community's need and redirect the land to be used towards residential development. Please sign this petition to demand a change in land use from a rehab center to a  1/2 acre plus residential subdivision.

Even if the city does not support this center, we recognize that considerable city resources and time will be spent in legal battles to prevent its establishment. We believe that redirecting this effort towards a positive development, such as the proposed subdivision, would not only align with the interests of our community but also enhance its growth and sustainability.

We urge the city council to engage with the developer to explore the possibility of creating a subdivision that meets the needs of our community, fostering a safe and welcoming environment for current and future residents. Together, we can ensure that Hooper City remains a place we are proud to call home.
