Stop euthanizing bears and open multiple rehab areas in Alberta

The Issue

Two grizzly cubs were taking shelter in a grain bin south of Lethbridge, AB and they were patiently waiting for momma to return.  She was found dead not too far from the grain bin.  The last thing that momma had done for her cubs was to rip the steel door to the bin.

Alberta Fish & Wildlife Officers decided that it was best that these two cubs be euthanized and this took place June 27, 2014.  The Officers stated that they could not find a zoo willing to take the two cubs.  There is still great controversy over grizzly bears in Alberta and whether they should be protected or not.  There is roughly 760 grizzlies in Alberta.

The cubs deserved  to have been given a second chance of life and they could have been taken to a place where rehabilitation could have happened instead of their very young lives stripped away.  Alberta desperately needs to change it's license to rehab bears in our province as there is a need for it.  The rehabilitation of brown bears has proven to be successful in British Columbia, Russia, Romania and many other countries  where the species exist.  It is time for the Alberta government to move forward in their thinking and place Alberta's endangered grizzly bears on the list of species to be rehabilitated for release.
