Mashaiya Dorsey started this petition to Honorable Michael A. Shipp

“My name is Mashaiya L. Dorsey, I’m 13 years old and I am starting this petition for my father Jerry Dorsey. I've heard the things the courts have said about my father and how they judge him but that's not who he is to me or our community so I’m asking the people from my community to help me, help my father. This petition is not to make excuses for my father’s past or to ignore that he has one. I’m just asking that you use justice not judgement when sentencing him.”

“Justice Not Judgement”

Jerry Dorsey was originally charged with possession of a firearm and marijuana. The marijuana charges were eventually thrown out as a part of the plea but although the drug charge was dropped, the 5 years that came with the drug charge remained. Considering his past and using the point system his current charges should only have him serving 70-87 months, instead he is being sentenced to 120 months. After hearing about the sentencing for Jerry Dorsey in which is unjust. We as a community feel the need to address the prison sentence in an effort to have it lowered using the proper guidelines and point system.

Jerry Dorsey has been a powerful voice. Positively impacting the Ocean and Monmouth county area. By doing so, he has inspired other communities to come together to make positive impact. Jerry Dorsey does not just inspire the children in his community. It is the at risk youth and families that have benefited from the programs set in place to uplift and change them in a positive way. He has gone the extra mile to make a lasting impact that constantly contributes to the community by creating a nonprofit organization. This organization guides its members to help cultivate a conducive environment for upward growth. In collaboration with many other well-respected community leaders, together, a substantial amount of donations were raised for the community by the community. They’ve come to together to bring back programs like Pop Warner, The Biddy league basketball program, Unity Day; a back to school program, Christmas Toy drives, Community Easter Egg hunts, and food drives. Along with, the combined efforts of various organizations Jerry has also been able to help facilitate scholarships funds and helping families through hardships including those who lost everything in a recent fire.

Unlike other offenders Jerry has been consistently working on being a better person in an effort to benefit young men and women in our  communities, along with those surrounding it. Using justice not judgement will not only lesson the sentencing when it comes to Mr. Jerry Dorsey but more importantly it will help to continue the reform process of him and prevent similar situations from reoccurring. Thus making it easier on law enforcement by assisting in making the streets a safer place by mentoring at risk youth from going down a path that will only lead to destruction. It is Jerry’s mission to move his community upward and onward for a greater purpose of productivity that it is conducive to all of its members.

With this case weighing heavily on Jerry and his family. He continues to dedicate his time, efforts, energy and resources to uplift and refine the environments surrounding him. All the while overcoming his own adversities he continues to improve and be a better man and productive member of society daily. Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to error that counts.” - Nikki Giovanni. Mr. Dorsey has been working consistently to make a difference in his life and everyone in which he is surrounded by. I Thank you sincerely for your consideration. As stated earlier, this petition is not to excuse, ignore nor justify Jerry's Past. We are just asking as a community that you use justice not judgement when sentencing him.
