The Issue

Remembering my school years in Somerville, there is one person who influenced my life significantly. His name was Kenneth Lonergan, a mediator, mentor, and director of drama plays for students — a powerful beacon of kindness and understanding for several generations. Mr. Lonergan did not judge anyone based on their beliefs, social or financial status or their upbringing. Instead, he gave us the encouragement and support we needed to surmount our difficulties and achieve the best of our potential.

Mr. Lonergan made an indelible mark on the community, turning Somerville into a safer and more prosperous place to live and grow. His role as a mediator between conflicting students, his tireless effort to keep peace in our school and his devotion to enhance our life skills through drama programs, contributed significantly to the city and its inhabitants.

By dedicating a memorial plaque or square to honor his memory, we will not only recognize his valuable contribution but also inspire the coming generations to dedicate themselves similarly to the service of others.

His influence was so profound that many students, including myself, maintained contact with him over the years, further cultivating those seeds planted during our time in school. His dedication to students that had gone through difficult times and the love he showed towards the community, truly makes him an icon and a staple in Somerville.

He was a loyal friend, an exceptional mentor, and a remarkable member of our community. Now, it's time for us to share his story and keep his memory alive through a permanent memorial that Council and visitors alike can pay respects to.

This is why I kindly ask you to sign this petition: to honor Kenneth Lonergan's legacy and thank him for his good deeds. He was a pillar in our city, his impact is still felt and his immense contribution deserves recognition. Let's keep his memory alive.
