Honor Sean at Graduation – Modesto City Schools Must Do Better

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are calling on Modesto City Schools to allow a meaningful tribute to Sean, a student who died by suicide in 2022 and would have graduated this year. His life mattered, and he deserves to be honored alongside his classmates.

Sean was supposed to be part of the 2025 Class at Beyer High School. He should be walking the stage with his classmates this year. Instead, he’s being erased.
Despite repeated requests from students and community members, the Modesto City School District has refused to allow any recognition of Sean at graduation — no empty seat, no flowers, no photo, no mention of his name. This decision was made without explanation and goes against the values of compassion, community, and mental health awareness that schools should uphold. As someone who has personally battled the weight of mental health challenges, and whose younger sister has also struggled but is now graduating, I know how critical it is to make space for these conversations and to honor those we’ve lost. Sean was more than a tragedy. He was a son, a friend, a classmate — and he still deserves dignity and remembrance. By silencing his name, MCS sends the message that students lost to suicide don’t deserve to be remembered. This is not only wrong, it’s dangerous. We demand that Modesto City Schools:
Allow a dedicated seat with a cap and gown for Sean at graduation Permit a brief recognition during the ceremony
Uphold the rights of students and families to speak openly about loss and mental health Let’s show the students of Beyer and beyond that every life matters — in joy and in grief. Please sign and share. Help us give Sean the honor he deserves.
