The Issue

I'm standing on Nisenan land, what we now call Roseville, California. This place is rich with history, where indigenous people once prepared food on grinding rocks that still stand today. It's crucial for us to recognize that long before Roseville was established, this land belonged to the Nisenan people. Their heritage and culture deserve our respect and acknowledgment, now more than ever.

The song "Quechua 101 Land Back Please" by Bobby Sanchez speaks deeply to indigenous struggles and the ongoing land back movement. Bobby's powerful lyrics remind us of the painful history and systemic injustices faced by indigenous communities across the Americas. Colonization didn't just seize land; it attempted to erase identity and culture. The call for land back is about correcting these historical wrongs and honoring the heritage that has been overlooked.

By officially recognizing Roseville as Nisenan land, we take a significant step toward preserving their heritage. This recognition isn't just symbolism—it's an acknowledgment of their history and the cultural contributions they've made. It can open doors to education, create opportunities for cultural exchanges, and ensure that the truth about our land's history is shared with future generations.

Recognition of indigenous lands across the United States, including the Nisenan land, is essential to healing and moving forward. Doing so in Roseville sets an example for how we can respect the original stewards of this land, honoring not only their past but also paving the way for a future of mutual respect and understanding.

Let us honor the Nisenan people and help preserve their cultural legacy by urging our local government to officially recognize Roseville as Nisenan land. This recognition is a step towards justice and reconciliation. Please sign the petition to support this vital cause.
