Honor Joe "Chaco" Ramirez in Houston street renaming

The Issue

In Magnolia Park, my family and many others had the privilege of knowing Joe "Chaco" Ramirez, a true local hero whose legacy continues to inspire us all. Joe Ramirez distinguished himself not only as a POW during the Korean War but also as a pillar of our community upon his return home. It was in the embrace of Magnolia Park that Joe's dedication to service became truly evident to those fortunate enough to know him.

For many decades, Joe "Chaco" Ramirez served as an advocate and guardian for our neighbors, always ensuring that no one went hungry, children had someone to look up to, and our community had a friend in its midst. The gentle ripple effect of Joe's compassion spread across Magnolia, as he opened his home to provide a safe haven and extended a helping hand wherever needed.

The City of Houston is considering renaming Cesar Chavez Boulevard, a change that will impact the oldest and richest Chicano neighborhood: Magnolia Park. While there are many figures worthy of this honor, it is not often that a local POW, whose positive influence is felt so strongly, comes from our own neighborhood. Naming the street after Joe "Chaco" Ramirez is not just a nod to his military valor but a recognition of his continued selfless contributions to Magnolia and our cultural heritage.

Renaming Cesar Chavez Boulevard after Joe Ramirez it would be fitting tribute to his unwavering commitment to community empowerment and resilience. It would ensure that future generations are reminded daily of the values he cherished and lived by.

We call on the City of Houston to honor MSG. Joe "Chaco" Ramirez for his lifetime of service. Sign this petition to advocate for a fitting tribute to a hometown hero and ensure the legacy of Joe Ramirez lives on in the streets of the community he so dearly loved. Together, let's make Joe "Chaco" Ramirez an everlasting name in Magnolia Park.
