Honor Jackie the bald eagle with a respectful final resting place
The Issue
Jackie, the majestic bald eagle of Big Bear Lake, California, captured our hearts and became a symbol of perseverance and hope. Watching her majestic flights and tireless efforts to raise her offspring inspired thousands. More importantly, Jackie united us all, raising millions of dollars for land conservation and the preservation of the habitat she called home. Her legacy is woven into the fabric of Big Bear and among those who loved and supported her throughout her extraordinary life.
Tragically, Jackie passed away under mysterious circumstances. Now, to our dismay, the government intends to take her body away, disassembling it to distribute parts and feathers to select members of federally recognized Native American Tribes, as managed by the National Eagle Repository. This action not only neglects the profound impact Jackie had on the broader community but also ignores the connection we all shared with her. It disregards the massive efforts made by local and international supporters to protect and celebrate her habitat.
Jackie deserves a dignified farewell. Her final resting place should be in the heart of Big Bear, where she roamed, nested, and inspired. We call upon the authorities to return Jackie whole, allowing for a respectful burial or cremation in her rightful home. As stewards of wildlife and their habitats, it is imperative that we honor those creatures who mean so much to us in life and death.
We understand the cultural significance of the current policy. However, Jackie's unique story and contribution to conservation should not be overshadowed. We seek a compassionate exception for a beloved symbol whose influence extended far beyond cultural and geographic boundaries.
We urge the decision-makers to listen to the voices of those who have been touched by Jackie. Let us come together to ensure that her legacy is preserved with dignity and respect. Please sign this petition to give Jackie the reverent tribute she deserves, forever in the heart of Big Bear where her story began.
