We, the undersigned, respectfully request the upgrade of military honors for Hospital Corpsman Third Class (HM3) Leonard Long from the Purple Heart and Bronze Star to the Medal of Honor.

HM3 Leonard Long, a selfless hero, distinguished himself as a member of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, famously known as "The Walking Dead," a unit renowned for its unwavering courage. During the fierce battles near Khe Sanh in March 1968, while aiding a wounded comrade, HM3 Long was struck multiple times by enemy fire. Despite his grievous injuries, he persisted in his life-saving efforts. In a final, heart-wrenching act of heroism, he shielded his fellow Marine from an enemy grenade, sacrificing his own life.

Corporal Erdwin J. Clausen, an eyewitness to this extraordinary display of valor, provides a powerful testament to HM3 Long’s bravery. His selfless actions embody the highest ideals of the United States Marine Corps.

We firmly believe that HM3 Long’s actions undeniably surpass the criteria for the Medal of Honor. His courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to his comrades are a testament to the very best of the American spirit.

We urge you to carefully consider the evidence, including Corporal Clausen’s eyewitness account and the letter from Platoon Commander Jim Talone. Upgrading HM3 Long’s military honors to the Medal of Honor would be a fitting tribute to his sacrifice and a lasting honor for his family and the community of Tulare, California, where he was laid to rest on his 21st birthday.
