The Issue

As MacGregor Park's tennis center undergoes its historic renovation, Houston has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to honor the individual whose life's work transformed this facility into one of the nation's most influential public tennis programs.

For decades, Coach John Wilkerson dedicated his life to developing young people through tennis. His impact extended far beyond the court. He built a community where discipline, opportunity, education, and character came first.

Coach Wilkerson's program produced world-class players—including Wimbledon finalist and Olympic gold medalist Zina Garrison and WTA Top-10 player Lori McNeil—while also mentoring thousands of young Houstonians who went on to become teachers, doctors, business leaders, military members, parents, and community leaders. Many earned college scholarships through the opportunities he helped create.

His legacy is measured not only in championships, but in lives changed.

Our Request
We respectfully ask the City of Houston, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Houston City Council to rename the renovated facility:

-The John Wilkerson Tennis Center-

We also encourage the City to preserve Council Member Homer Ford's legacy by naming the new clubhouse The Homer Ford Clubhouse, or another prominent feature of the renovated complex, in his honor.

Council Member Ford played an important role in securing support for improvements to the facility, and his contributions to Houston deserve lasting recognition. At the same time, Coach John Wilkerson devoted decades to building one of the nation's most respected public tennis programs at this very site. Naming the tennis center in his honor, while preserving Homer Ford's name on the clubhouse, would recognize the unique and complementary legacies of two individuals who helped shape this remarkable place in different ways.

Why Now?
The renovation represents a new chapter for this historic facility. As Houston invests in its future, we should also preserve and celebrate the legacy of the individual who built one of the city's greatest tennis traditions.

Renaming the center would ensure that every child who walks through its gates learns about the coach who believed that tennis could change lives—and proved it.
