STOP RAIL at Middle Street! Complete all the work to Middle Street first.
Portions of the rail route from Middle Street to the Ala Moana Center will be in the Honolulu Sea Level Rise Inundation Zone. Why are we throwing more billions of dollars into this antiquated and noisy rail system?
The Honolulu Rail started in 2006 with an estimated $2.7 BILLION Costs.
As of this petition, Mayor Kirk Caldwell estimates it will take $11 BILLION to complete the rail project from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center. Completion Date is 2033! No one is holding their breath that there will be no more escalating costs and more delays.
The Caldwell administration is now projecting a $400 Million operating budget shortfall. COVID19 has also caused severe fiscal hardships. Residents are already experiencing escalating property taxes, fees such as vehicle registration and others. Many businesses have shut down. More residents are leaving Oahu due to costs of living.
STOP RAIL at Middle Street. Technology is changing. There are other viable transportation options.
Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) can happen WITHOUT the rail. Oahu residents are not money trees.
