PLEASE HELP Polynesian Master Carver Miti in Hauula, Oahu, Hawaii from Shut-Down!
The Issue
"Miti’s Art Gallery" recently had its humble wood carving shop shut down by the City and County of Honolulu - Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP).
Miti operates his roadside shop where he carves and sells carvings to support his 8 children. Two of them are receiving support for their college tuition from this income. He uses wood from fallen trees and also those in their Ag-2 family farm.
His wood carvings are part of the unique Pacific Islander Culture and Art that contribute to the valuable diversity of Hawaii.
This small roadside stand is part of the KEEP THE COUNTRY COUNTRY charm where small businesses in rural Ko'olau Loa communities are encouraged and allowed on Agricultural-zoned property.
Miti is a big man with a big heart and amazing talent. He's doing honest work to support his family.
We don't understand why the Honolulu Department of Planning & Permitting (DPP) is targeting and shutting down this small rural business.
On February 17, 2022, DPP issued a Notice of Violation for his tent canopy that was used for protection from the sun and the rain. He was told to take down all his tents (ez corners) or face more monetary fines from DPP.
We don't understand why DPP is targeting and discriminating against this Polynesian Master Carver. Miti's Art Gallery is allowed in Hawaii Revised Statutes HRS 205-2 (15) for farm business.
(A) A roadside stand that is not an enclosed structure, owned and operated by a producer for the display and sale of agricultural products grown in Hawaii and value-added products that were produced using agricultural products grown in Hawaii;
A quick drive around other farm businesses in Oahu will reveal countless "ez corners" or canopy tents.
Why is DPP targeting and discriminating against this Polynesian Master Carver? Miti is trying to make an honest living to support his family.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi and Dean Uchida, Director of Planning and Permitting (DPP), please be fair to all. Show Aloha to all. Help Small Businesses.
FYI: This site asks for donations. The donations do not go to Miti. It goes to Change.org
