Rent in Nigeria should be paid monthly not yearly

Rent in Nigeria should be paid monthly not yearly
The Issue
Rent payment is a big issue in Nigeria. Our large population and high urban migration rate have led to an increase in demand for houses, especially rented apartments. Cities like Lagos and Abuja have seen rent prices increase significantly over the years due to the limited availability of houses and high demand from renters.
Let’s face it, the average working-class Nigerian or Nigerian family can’t afford to pay for their rent comfortably, let alone those that are unemployed. Many Nigerians borrow money just to pay their rent, as landlords usually ask for one or two years' bulk payment in most cases.
With the current inflation and high unemployment rates in the country, we need the government to implement a policy for monthly rent payment. For crying out loud, Nigerians get paid their wages monthly. Why are we paying rent yearly?
If rent had to be paid monthly, people could live comfortably and use the bulk cash for other projects, businesses, or investments, which would in turn yield more income for sustainability.
Landlords on the other hand don't have to wait a whole year before getting paid. This creates a flexibility where everyone is happy.
Senator Smart Adeyemi recently sponsored a bill to make monthly payments a law in Abuja. This is a smart move that should be made available in Lagos as well.
Please let’s sign this petition to get the Minister of Works and Housing, Hon. Babatunde Fashola, Senate committee chairman on housing, Senator Sam Egwu, House of Assembly committee chairman on housing, Hon. Makinde Rasheed, and other stakeholders to look into this and ease the sufferings of Nigerians.
If we get this into a law, accommodation will not be an issue for the masses.
