We did it!
Thank you so much to the more than a thousand supporters who picked up the phone or sent an email to the Senate calling on them to vote against Senator Lang's amendment.
This amendment would have allowed for citizenship-stripping of dual citizens and provided for a system that gives Canadians different legal rights based on where they or their families were born.
Moments ago, the Senate voted 44 to 28 to reject Senator Lang's amendment.
This is another important step towards rolling back the changes made by Bill C-24 and restoring citizenship equality.
This isn't the end.
After all the amendments are considered and voted on, the Senate will still need to vote to pass Bill C-6 at third reading. Then the Bill will go BACK to the House of Commons, which will need to decide what to do with the Bill as amended by the Senate. It's been a long road, but we have made a lot of progress.
While we still have more to do, today's victory would not have been possible without your support!
Thank you for standing up for citizenship equality. We'll keep you up to date as this campaign proceeds.
Talk soon,
Charlotte Kingston, Director of Community Engagement
