Give college teachers job postings in their home districts
Give college teachers job postings in their home districts
The Issue
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected every sphere of our lives, leading to a complete shutdown in most countries to avoid the spread of this extremely infectious disease. Most nations, including India, took the wise and timely decision of closing educational institutions, in order to protect the children and the youth. Although it has been more than four months, there seems no reduction in the number of cases. Instead, India has become the fourth worse affected nation in the world, and in West Bengal too cases of infections are increasing every day.
Amidst this crisis, one has to think long-term. Covid-19 shows no signs of disappearing anytime soon, and even if does, many scientists say that it could relapse within a few months, leading to a fresh spurt of infections. When colleges reopen, most teachers will have to travel to their workplaces, which are often located far from their home districts. Some teachers even have to commute daily for long hours because they cannot leave their families and stay near their workplace. Most teachers use public transport to reach their workplace, and this highly increases the risk of them getting infected, and in turn, becoming super spreaders who would infect the entire college and subsequently the entire community. On the other hand, if they are given postings near their homes, they can use private transport, which would minimize the risk of infection to a great extent. Furthermore, it would lead to less crowding in public transports, thus benefitting every member of the society.
The School Education Department of West Bengal Government has already issued a circular regarding transfer of school teachers on 28.01.2020, (circular number 119-ES/admn/6T/2020). It is thus our urgent and humble appeal to the Honourable Education Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Partha Chatterjee and Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee to address this matter and transfer college teachers to colleges in their home districts as soon as possible.
