Lift Ban on Leggings

Lift Ban on Leggings
The Issue
Homestead High School's dress code enforces misogyny through regulation of the student body's allowance to wear leggings. Typically, this rule targets the female portion of the student body. Most administration when questioned about the ban against leggings claim the reasoning is to create a "professional environment" and "help stop distractions for the boys." However, leggings are not inherently unprofessional. To argue that a dress code should be used to prepare students for the real world in which many businesses require professional attire would be illogical, as then most students should be expected to wear suits to school. Leggings and yoga pants are neither obscene nor revealing, and such heavy rules against an article of clothing is unfounded. Many argue that leggings/yoga pants are too tight-fitting to wear to school, but to argue this would necessitate a ban on skinny jeans and other well-fitting pants as well. Furthermore, pulling girls out of class to be sent to the office (or ISS) for wearing leggings/yoga pants is extremely unfair as it places a higher worth on the education of male students than their female counterparts. Claiming it is a girl's job to make sure her attire does not distract other boys encourages rape culture in that it is the victim's fault for whatever crime has been committed against them. This is an extremely unhealthy and wrong idea to promote to young adults whose opinions and beliefs are very susceptible to influence during high school. This petition does not call for removing Homestead's dress code altogether, but rather for more leniency on the allowance of leggings/yoga pants.
