We ask that you, as a responsible retailer, by November 18, 2014 (National Glue Trap Awareness Day) set an example for other retailers by committing to phase out the sale of inhumane glue traps.

The Issue

Dear Chief Executive Officers,

We believe that you stand by the products that you carry.  If this is indeed the case we ask that you take a rodent glue trap, that currently retails in your store, and place it on your desk.  Now we politely ask that you go to a local pet store and purchase a mouse or rat and upon returning to your office affix it to the glue board.  Once the mouse/rat firmly stuck to the glue board we ask that you observe the helpless creature: struggle, possibly gnaw on it's own leg in an effort to free itself, slowly starve, and dehydrate on the glue trap for the next few days until it is dead.  We would also ask that you bring your wife and children (if applicable) in periodically to check on the "pest" as it reaches the end of it's life.

If you cannot do this, or deem it to be unreasonable, we would like to ask, "Why?"  Is it not time to lead your company in a more responsible direction when it comes to the suffering of animals?

It is a fact that the glue boards you currently carry have actually already been banned in other countries because of the immense inhumane suffering they inflict over an unconscionable period of time.

We feel confident that you'll agree that currently there are are a significant amount of products you retail that, when used proporly are more capable in controling a rodent popularion even if it means killing them. The termination of an animal through dehydration, exposure to the elements, and/or starvation is nothing short of barbaric, and needs to end.

However, while company's like Dollar Tree, Safeway, and CVS Pharamacy have stopping selling Glue Traps as a direct result of the slowly growing public uproar-- your company has continued to sell Glue Traps without reform.  Thus, it has been decided that if the legitimate suffering of said "pests" is not persuasive enough to end your company’s sale of glue boards then it must be due to some perceived monetary loss that has somehow been deemed unrecoverable if those products were to suddenly no longer be sold in your stores.

For that reason this petition markets the beginning of an annual competition we are calling the "2014GlueTrapChallenge".  You and your company are one of five large home improvement retailers we are automatically entering in the race that will officially begin on July 4, 2014 (signifying the hopeful freedom from the inhumanity of glue traps) and ending on November 18, 2014  (just prior to Black Friday, as well as the official birthday of a mouse Americans have loved for almost 90 years).

Those who sign this petition and rally around the race will be watching all five retailers to see which company, if any, will stand before their board of directors, shareholders (where applicable), and customers and say, "You know what?  This makes sense. We are going to lead the way in doing the right thing!  This is long overdue, and we do not believe - that even an animal deemed a 'pest' - has to suffer a slow, agonizing death, unnecessarily."

We also think it is fair to say that if your company does not come in first there is a good chance your marketing department should be held culpable.  That is because whoever comes in first will receive the positive media attention that is generated by today's consumers who desperately want to believe that a company, such as yours, cares about more than just their bottom-line. Moreover, it is important, to note that whoever comes in first will also automatically put pressure on others to follow suit or thereafter, be viewed as the "uncaring" company.

Most important though, if you are the only one, or hopefully one of the ones to decide enough is enough; then you will not only win our appreciation, but- more importantly- our loyalty and patronage.

Respectfully,

Your Hopeful Future Patrons
