Holding Drunk Drivers Accountable!!! Support Jamari’s Law

Support Maryland Senate Bill 0364 - Jamari's Law

I, John Duckett, urge you to support Maryland Senate Bill 0364, also known as Jamari's Law. This crucial legislation proposes to increase the maximum period of imprisonment for manslaughter by vehicle or vessel.

As a grieving father who lost his 18 year old son, Jamari Duckett, to a drunk driver in July 2022, I am HURT by the thought that the punishment did not fit the crime. The current law is INADEQUATE, with a maximum penalty of 10 years for a first conviction, in which you only have to do 25% of that time.

*The Proposed Change:*

Maryland Senate Bill 0364 proposes to increase the maximum period of imprisonment to 20 years for a first conviction and 30 years for a second or subsequent conviction. This legislation is a beacon of hope for families like mine who have been torn apart by Drunk Driving.

*Why This Law Matters:*

Jamari's Law will prevent others from suffering the same fate as my son. It will send a strong message to would-be offenders that the consequences of their actions will be severe. I urge you to support Senate Bill 0364 and ensure that justice is served for victims of Drunk Driving.

*Join Me in Supporting Jamari's Law:*

I request that you sign this petition to demonstrate your support for Maryland Senate Bill 0364. Together, we can create a safer, more just society where human life is valued above all else.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

John Duckett
Father of Jamari Duckett

Update from the Office of Sen. Jack Bailey: We recently spoke with the Office of State Senator Jack Bailey, who is a proud sponsor of Maryland Senate Bill 0364, also known as Jamari's Law. His office expects the legislation to pass the Senate. To make Jamari's Law a reality, they are urging supporters to focus on getting enough support for it to pass in the Maryland House of Delegates. Here’s what they highlighted can help right now: Contact Your Delegate: Reach out to your representative in the Maryland House of Delegates and let them know you support Jamari's Law. Focus on the Judiciary Committee: If your delegate is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, your voice is especially important. Encourage them to bring this life-saving legislation across the finish line.
