The Issue

Who is impacted?

The family, students, and millions who learned from American GM Daniel Naroditsky are grieving after his death at 29; the cause has not been disclosed. His loss affects a global community of players, coaches, and fans who relied on his teaching and commentary. In the year before his passing, former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik publicly and repeatedly accused Naroditsky of online cheating; FIDE has now said it is looking into Kramnik’s campaign. Naroditsky denied wrongdoing and appeared visibly distressed in his final Twitch broadcast. These events have harmed not just one player’s reputation and well-being but the wider culture of online chess.

What is at stake?

If high-profile figures can level severe, unfounded public accusations without consequence, toxicity spreads and trust in fair play erodes. FIDE’s own rules prohibit conduct and statements that bring chess into disrepute, and they specifically allow discipline for severe or repeated manifestly unfounded cheating accusations—especially when amplified on social media. In serious cases, FIDE regulations also provide for title revocation. Enforcing these standards protects players from reputational harm and helps keep the game credible and safe for everyone.

Why is now the time to act?

This is a moment of reckoning for chess. The community is openly calling for accountability, and FIDE has confirmed it is reviewing Kramnik’s conduct toward Naroditsky. Prompt, transparent action—an Ethics & Disciplinary Commission case and appropriate sanctions if violations are found—can set the precedent that titles come with responsibility, and that public discourse by top figures must meet FIDE’s standards.

Our request:

We ask FIDE to open an EDC case into Vladimir Kramnik’s public conduct and—if violations are established—to impose the strongest available sanctions, up to and including revocation of FIDE titles. Please add your name if you agree.

(We are not alleging any causation for Daniel’s death; only that FIDE should enforce its rules on public conduct and fair play. News reports confirm the death and that FIDE is reviewing Kramnik’s campaign.)
