On February 10th, 2026, my life changed forever. I took my beloved dog, Coco, to the University of Georgia’s Veterinary Hospital due to elevated kidney and liver enzymes. Early that day, the doctor spoke about euthanasia as a "gift", seemingly without understanding Coco's condition—something that was treatable. My daughter and I quickly went outside to gather the rest of the funds needed for Coco’s treatment, but during the brief moments we were away from him, something unimaginable happened. The doctor persistently called, asking for the money while we were outside, and shortly thereafter informed us Coco had passed away. My heart knew something was terribly wrong. I later discovered that Coco was given medications including methadone, lidocaine, fentanyl, and ketamine without my consent or knowledge. These drugs are incredibly potent, and the lack of proper communication or transparency from the veterinarian is unacceptable. I am devastated and heartbroken by the preventable loss of a cherished family member. This experience highlights a critical issue within the veterinary medical system: the need for accountability and proper oversight. Pets are like family to many, and we trust veterinarians to care for them ethically and diligently. Sadly, my story is not an isolated incident; numerous pet owners have faced similar negligence and lack of accountability from veterinary professionals. It is essential that veterinarians are held responsible for their actions. This petition calls for: 1. A mandatory review process for any procedures or medications that involve high-risk drugs, ensuring transparency and efficacy. 2. Implementation of a standardized protocol for seeking explicit consent from pet owners before administering treatments or medications. 3. Establishment of an independent board to handle misconduct allegations and grievances related to veterinary care, ensuring unbiased and thorough investigations. 4. Continuous training and evaluation programs for veterinarians to ensure updated, humane, and ethical practices.
