Hold Those Accountable for River Wye Pollution

The Issue

As a university student passionate about environmental protection, I’m increasingly concerned about the environmental impacts of intensive poultry farming and the health of rivers like the River Wye, which are vital to ecosystems and communities across Wales and beyond.

The River Wye, once a thriving and pristine waterway, has recently been downgraded to "unfavourable-declining" status by Natural England, with nutrient pollution linked in part to runoff from agricultural sources. This pollution contributes to algal blooms and oxygen-deprived “dead zones” that severely impact aquatic life and biodiversity.

Research and investigative reporting have highlighted how poultry farming in the Wye catchment—some of which may be connected to suppliers for high street restaurant chains like Nando’s—plays a role in these environmental challenges. While no single actor is solely responsible, large buyers in the supply chain have the power and responsibility to push for more sustainable practices.

As a major player in the UK’s chicken market, Nando’s is in a unique position to lead the way. By encouraging transparency and sustainability in its sourcing, Nando’s can be part of the solution. This petition calls on Nando’s to:

  1. Increase transparency around its poultry supply chain,
  2. Ensure that its suppliers adopt environmentally responsible practices,
  3. Support efforts to protect the River Wye and other affected ecosystems.

This is not just about one river—it’s about recognising our collective influence through consumer choices and corporate accountability. Join me in calling for a better standard in food sourcing and river protection. Let’s work toward a future where enjoying good food doesn’t come at the cost of the environment.
