Hold the South Australian Government responsible for letting down the Autistic students
The issue
We, the undersigned, demand immediate and uncompromising action from the South Australian Government to address the systemic neglect and harm faced by autistic students in the education system. It is unacceptable that, while student behavior is closely monitored, there is no equal scrutiny on the actions of the teachers and school leaders who are responsible for bullying these vulnerable students. This failure to act has allowed a culture of abuse to persist in schools, and the time for change is now.
Research shows that autistic students are four times more likely to be bullied than their neurotypical peers. Despite efforts such as the appointment of Autism Inclusion Teachers, these measures are insufficient if bullying—especially by educators—continues unchecked. The South Australian Government’s inaction is not just a failure in policy; it is a direct violation of the duty of care owed to these students. When teachers and principals are allowed to bully students without consequence, it results in severe emotional and psychological damage.
The harm caused by such behavior is not just an isolated issue—it is a systemic failure. This must be addressed at the highest levels. Therefore, we demand the following actions:
- Immediate Suspension and Investigation of All Staff Accused of Bullying: Any teacher, principal, or school staff member accused of bullying an autistic student should be immediately suspended pending a full and independent investigation. If the allegations are substantiated, they should be permanently removed from the education system. We cannot tolerate individuals who perpetuate harm.
2. Strict Legal Accountability for Educators Who Bully: We call for the introduction of legal consequences for educators who engage in bullying behavior. This includes criminal charges if the bullying constitutes harassment or abuse. The legal system must hold educators to the same standards of accountability as any other professional entrusted with the care and safety of children.
3. Mandatory and Ongoing Anti-Bullying Training for All School Staff: All educators must undergo comprehensive, ongoing training focused on autism, neurodiversity, and inclusive teaching practices. Teachers must learn to foster a culture of respect and inclusion, and anyone failing to comply with these standards should face immediate disciplinary action.
4. Independent, Accessible Reporting Systems with Legal Protections: Set up confidential, independent systems that allow students and parents to report bullying by staff without fear of retaliation. These systems must have legal protections in place to ensure that whistleblowers are not subjected to further harm or discrimination.
5. Enhanced Mental Health and Support Services for Autistic Students: The government must ensure that all autistic students have access to specialized counseling and peer support programs, helping them to cope with the trauma caused by bullying and enabling them to feel safe and supported in their educational environment.
The South Australian Government has failed autistic students long enough. No child should have to endure bullying, especially from those in positions of authority. We demand immediate, decisive action to hold educators accountable for their actions, ensure justice for victims, and protect the rights of every autistic student in South Australia.
Sign this petition to demand that the government take action, put an end to bullying in schools, and ensure the safety and dignity of autistic students.
I am advocating for autistic students who are suffering within the education system in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. By signing this petition, you are not only helping me, but also supporting the entire autistic community in Adelaide. Once I reach my goal of 5,000 signatures, I will take this petition to Parliament House and demand action and change.
My goal is to hold schools accountable, ensuring that any bullying faced by autistic students is not ignored. I will push for an investigation into every reported case. If the bullying is found to be legitimate, I will demand that Parliament take disciplinary and legal action. Enough is enough.
