CCed Ellery Ireland. Esq
In the fall of 2022, Equality for Flatbush were informed by family members, that 3 elder tenants in Apt #2B at 682 Rogers Ave, had been tricked and illegally locked out by con artist, Maria Bastita . This family of elders , including a man who is terminally ill and in the final stages of life, were the primary tenants who have resided at 682 Rogers, a rent-stabilized building for over 30 years. Equality for Flatbush retained the services of Ellery Ireland, Esq, who restored the elders to the apartment in October 2023.
The Shine Corp, knowing full-well that the legal tenants of Apt 2B had NOT accrued the back-rent owed in 2022 , decided to not only force these elders to pay it but also choose to call the marshals to evict them the week of December 11th. These tenants and their attorney Ellery Ireland, did an Order To Show Cause and the judge brought down the amount to $9000.
Multiple E4F members and our community partners came together to raise the $9000 within days to stop the eviction of the elders . Ellery Ireland offered a check in that exact dollar amount to your attorney on two occasions between December 11- 18, 2023. On the instructions of The Shine Corp, your attorney illegally refused to take payment from rent-stabilized tenants and only through a recent court order were forced to do so.
In the meantime, Shine Corp has physically and illegally blocked these elders from paying their January rent online. Edward Pabol and other Shine Corp employees have sent out harassing emails or engaged in harassing phone calls demanding the elders pay over $10K . Family members with no financial responsibility to Apt #2B have also been harassed over the phone in the last 2 months.
If these demands are not rectified immediately we will escalate our campaign.

Equality for Flatbush (E4F)is a grassroots organization that has fought gentrification , displacement and police violence since 2013 . Our membership is largely lifelong and long-term Black Caribbean women & descendants of migrants of color. Given the high rate of 911/ 311 calls that result in police violence and murder, E4F serves as a Brooklyn-wide Alternative to Calling 911 Hotline that rapidly responds to domestic violence, anti-BIPOC and anti-LGBTQ+ hate, elder abuse, police violence/murders, building fires, illegal evictions/lockouts, and the displacement of tenants, homeowners, small businesses and BIPOC cultural institutions. In 2022, E4F established our Emergency Housing and Rental Assistance Fund. To our knowledge Equality for Flatbush is the only grassroots organization in NYC rapidly responding to pay peoples’ rent, re-locate survivors of violence and provide emergency housing to stop displacement.
