The Issue

Growing up, I always believed in the promise that consuming products in America meant adhering to safety standards that protected my family and me. It was a comforting thought that products on our shelves wouldn’t harm us. But as I grew older, I learned of the alarming truth: many ingredients deemed unsafe and banned in other countries are still widely used in the United States. This unsettling realization shook my faith in the agencies meant to protect us, particularly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This is not just my reality, but it affects millions of Americans daily. Ingredients like certain food additives, artificial colorings, and preservatives that are banned in Europe and other parts of the world due to their potential health risks are shockingly still allowed in the products we consume. The FDA was established to protect us from these very threats, yet their actions suggest otherwise. It seems as though they're prioritizing the interests and capital gains of large corporations over our health and safety.

The European Union has banned over 1,300 ingredients in cosmetics, while the FDA has only restricted about 11. This startling difference highlights a systemic issue that puts us in harm's way. Shouldn't the health and well-being of American citizens come first?

The FDA needs to be held accountable for their negligence and failure to adapt their regulations to the evolving scientific evidence about these harmful substances. Our health should never play second fiddle to corporate profits. Therefore, I propose a multi-step action plan:

1. **Immediate reevaluation and revision** of the ingredients currently permissible by the FDA that are banned elsewhere.
2. **Implementation of strict regular testing and review protocols** for all consumer products.
3. **Transparency** - The FDA should clearly communicate the criteria and evidence used in their approval processes.
4. **Public awareness campaigns** to educate consumers on what is in their products and the risks they pose.

These measures will ensure that our health is prioritized and that we, as consumers, have the knowledge and power to make safer choices. No one should have to live in fear of what's in their food, cosmetics, or any other products.

I urge you to take a stand with me against the negligence that compromises our safety. Demand change and accountability. Sign this petition to hold the FDA accountable for the well-being of all American consumers and put our health and safety first!
