Why This Petition Matters

India’s education system is the foundation of our nation’s future. Every year, millions of students dedicate years of relentless hard work, sacrifice, and hope to prepare for highly competitive national examinations such as NEET. For many families, these examinations are not merely tests—they represent years of financial investment, emotional commitment, and the dream of becoming doctors who will serve the nation.

The recent controversy surrounding the alleged NEET paper leak and other reported examination irregularities has deeply shaken public confidence in the integrity of India’s examination system. The credibility of one of the country’s most important entrance examinations has been called into question, leaving countless students and parents anxious about whether merit alone determines success. Reports indicate that investigations are underway and arrests have been made in connection with the alleged leak, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.

Beyond the examination itself, this crisis has had a profound emotional impact. Students have reported immense stress, uncertainty, and fear regarding their futures. Public concern has also grown over reports of student suicides that have been discussed in connection with the examination controversy. Whether or not every tragedy can be attributed to a single cause, these events have highlighted the immense psychological burden placed upon students and the urgent need for a transparent, accountable, and trustworthy education system.

As these concerns intensified, students, parents, educators, and citizens gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to peacefully demand accountability, transparency, and meaningful reforms. Their demands include an independent investigation into the alleged examination irregularities, structural reforms to safeguard future examinations, and accountability from those entrusted with protecting the integrity of India’s education system.

Instead of seeing these concerns addressed through dialogue, the nation witnessed disturbing scenes during the “Sansad Chalo” protest. Reports indicate that clashes occurred between protesters and police, with many demonstrators sustaining injuries following the use of tear gas and baton charges. Protesters and civil society groups have alleged that women students and peaceful demonstrators were among those injured. While authorities have stated that police acted to enforce public-order restrictions, these events have intensified concerns regarding the treatment of citizens exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest and reinforce the need for an independent inquiry into the incidents.

The continued hunger strike of education activist Sonam Wangchuk has further amplified the growing demand for accountability, transparency, and meaningful reforms. His protest has become a symbol of a broader call from students and citizens who believe that India’s education system requires urgent structural change and responsible leadership.

Why We Believe Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Should Resign

In every parliamentary democracy, ministers are expected to uphold the principle of ministerial accountability. While ongoing investigations will determine individual legal responsibility for any alleged wrongdoing, the political responsibility for the functioning of the Ministry rests with its Minister.

As the Union Education Minister, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan is responsible for overseeing the institutions and policies that govern India’s national examination system. The alleged NEET paper leak, the resulting loss of confidence among millions of students and parents, the prolonged uncertainty surrounding one of India’s most important examinations, and the public dissatisfaction with the handling of the crisis together represent a significant failure of governance for which ministerial accountability must be accepted.

Our demand for his resignation is not an allegation of personal criminal guilt. Rather, it is based on the constitutional convention that when public confidence in a ministry is seriously undermined, the Minister should accept political responsibility. Such a step would demonstrate respect for democratic values, allow independent investigations to proceed without questions regarding ministerial oversight, and send a clear message that the future of India’s students is more important than holding public office.

A resignation under these circumstances would help restore public trust, reaffirm the Government’s commitment to accountability, and mark the beginning of comprehensive reforms needed to protect the integrity of India’s education system.

This petition is not directed against any political party or ideology. It is a call for constitutional accountability. The Ministry of Education is responsible for ensuring the integrity of India’s national examinations. The Ministry of Home Affairs and law-enforcement agencies are responsible for safeguarding the constitutional right to peaceful protest while maintaining public order. The Government of India, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has the ultimate responsibility to restore public trust in institutions that millions of young Indians depend upon.

We Therefore Respectfully Call Upon the Government of India To:

1. Accept the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the grounds of ministerial accountability and appoint leadership capable of restoring public confidence in India’s education system.
2. Constitute an independent judicial or Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the alleged NEET examination irregularities and make its findings public.
3. Ensure swift prosecution of every individual or organization found responsible for examination malpractice, regardless of their position or influence.
4. Order an independent inquiry into the police action against peaceful protesters, including allegations of excessive force, injuries to students and women, and any violations of constitutional rights.
5. Guarantee every citizen’s constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest without fear of intimidation or unnecessary use of force.
6. Introduce comprehensive reforms to strengthen examination security, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, logistics, transparency, and accountability across all national examinations.
7. Establish an independent National Examination Integrity Commission to oversee high-stakes examinations and prevent future irregularities.
8. Strengthen mental-health support, counselling services, and grievance redressal mechanisms for students affected by examination-related distress.
9. Publish regular public progress reports on investigations and reforms to ensure transparency and rebuild confidence in India’s education system.

This petition is ultimately about protecting India’s future. A nation cannot expect excellence from its youth if they lose faith in the fairness of the institutions that shape their futures. Accountability is not an act of political opposition—it is a democratic obligation.

Every signature on this petition is a call for justice, transparency, constitutional accountability, and an education system where every student can believe that hard work, merit, and honesty will always matter more than corruption, negligence, or institutional failure.
