Hold the City of Madison Accountable for Campus Housing Preservation

The Issue

Madison, Wisconsin is home to the University of Wisconsin, a campus known for its vibrant community and charming houses, especially those well-loved by students. However, recent changes have dramatically affected this beloved area. The beautiful Dayton Street, once voted the most picturesque street on campus, was tree-lined with student houses that provided a sense of community and character. Today, it's marred by broken concrete, axed trees, and towering luxury apartments that are largely unaffordable for the local student population. This shift in the landscape doesn't only strip students of affordable living options but also erases the historical and cultural essence that alumni and current students hold dear.

Particularly troubling is the situation on Mifflin Street. The block between Bassett and Broom Street is under threat of complete demolition. The ongoing development prioritizes high-cost apartments with no regard for green spaces. The voices of Madison's students and residents have been ignored while profits are prioritized, leading to a drastic alteration of our cherished community. Even sadder, many current students are unaware of how beautiful off-campus used to be. We understand that more units will create a decreased demand and eventually more affordable housing, however! Please consider the community and charm when doing so!

ALUMNI! We need your help pushing back against Madison's city officials! We need more affordable housing and more care for the local green spaces! Say no to big apartments and yes to repairing the beautiful homes and/or building more sustainable ones! This includes designating specific zones where culturally-significant housing is protected and ensuring new developments include affordable housing options and green spaces.
