Hold Spectrum Accountable for Unreliable Service and Misrepresentation

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on Spectrum’s administrators and regulators at the state and federal level to hold Spectrum accountable for repeated outages, misleading claims of reliability, and inadequate compensation for consumers.

Many of us experience hours-long service disruptions weekly — often during the day when connection is critical for work, school, health care, and mental well-being. Spectrum advertises “reliable, high-speed connections,” but in practice, customers are trapped paying for a service that does not meet the basic standard of what is promised.

For shut-ins, the disabled, the elderly, and those living in rural or underserved areas, reliable internet and television are more than just conveniences — they are lifelines. When service is interrupted, our ability to maintain social connections, access resources, or simply experience the comfort of seeing another face on a screen is cut off.

The current practice of offering token “prorated credits” does not begin to cover the harm caused by these frequent, prolonged outages. Reliability should not be treated as optional.

We demand:

  • Transparency: Spectrum must publicly report all outages, their causes, and realistic repair timelines.
  • Accountability: Regulators must investigate misrepresentation of service reliability.
  • Fair Compensation: Customers should receive meaningful credits or rate reductions for repeated service interruptions.
  • Accessibility Protections: Special consideration must be given to vulnerable populations for whom connectivity is a health and safety necessity.

And if Spectrum is unwilling or unable to meet these demands, they should be required to relinquish control of the cable infrastructure. That infrastructure was built and expanded with public trust, subsidies, and consumer payments — it is not their private fiefdom. Another accountable provider with the expertise and commitment to maintain reliable service must be allowed to step in and end this reign of unreliability.
