Hold Social Media Giants Accountable: Protect Creators and Enforce Platform Guidelines

Hold Social Media Giants Accountable: Protect Creators and Enforce Platform Guidelines
The Issue
Who is impacted?
Creators like me—and millions of others who depend on social media platforms for our livelihoods—are being deeply affected by the unchecked power of these platforms. My channel, Bucerias_Joel, has been a trusted source of content about Bucerías, Mexico, for years. However, a defamatory video targeting me has turned my life upside down. The video falsely accuses me of fraud, exposes my personal information, and incites harmful rhetoric, putting me and my family at serious risk. YouTube’s failure to enforce its own policies has amplified this harm, promoting the damaging content while suppressing my legitimate work. This issue isn’t just about me—it’s about every creator who relies on these platforms and trusts them to act fairly.
What is at stake?
If nothing changes, this problem will only grow worse. Creators like me will continue to be punished by algorithms that prioritize harmful content over quality and fairness. Misinformation, harassment, and defamation will thrive, eroding trust between platforms, creators, and viewers. On the other hand, taking action can restore fairness and safety to YouTube and other social media platforms. It can show creators and communities that their voices matter, setting a precedent for accountability and ethical practices across the industry.
Why is now the time to act?
The escalating harassment I’ve experienced underscores the urgent need for action. Dangerous rhetoric in the video’s comments has reached a level where my safety is at risk. This is a clear example of how platform negligence can cause real harm. If social media companies continue to ignore these issues, the consequences will be devastating—not just for me, but for countless others who could face similar situations. Now is the time to hold YouTube and other platforms accountable for enforcing their policies, protecting creators, and fostering a fair digital environment. Together, we can push for change before more lives and livelihoods are damaged.
