The Issue

When I was researching for my school project, I was shocked to discover how many young people fall into extortion traps on social media platforms every day. This realisation struck a chord with me, highlighting the urgent need to shield our youth from these harmful and manipulative practices. The digital age has opened up incredible opportunities for learning and connection, but it has also become a breeding ground for those who prey on the vulnerabilities of minors.

It is crucial that social media companies take definitive steps to protect young users from harmful content and fraudulent networks. According to the Pew Research Center, over 90% of teenagers report using social media platforms regularly, and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) reports that 1 in 5 children aged 10-15 have experienced something upsetting online. These statistics underscore the pressing need for urgent reforms to safeguard minors effectively.

We urge social media companies to implement stricter content moderation policies, enhance detection of harmful behaviors, and increase educational resources for both minors and their parents to better understand how to navigate online spaces safely. Companies such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok must be held accountable for ensuring their platforms are not being misused to exploit or harm children. It's not just a corporate responsibility but a moral one, to ensure these platforms are safe havens rather than traps.

Moreover, we call for government action to enforce regulations that prioritize youth protection and provide clear consequences for non-compliance. Lawmakers should consider implementing fines or suspensions for companies who fail to meet these safety standards, thereby providing a strong deterrent against neglecting the wellbeing of young users.

The time to act is now. Our youth deserve a future where they can explore the digital world without fear and with full protection against malicious forces. Let’s work together to drive change and make the online environment a safe and inviting space for all children. Please sign this petition to demand immediate and decisive action from social media companies and our government to protect our children from online harm.
