Hold Scale AI Accountable for Its Use of Digital Sweatshops

The Issue

In an age where technology is meant to liberate and empower, companies like Scale AI are exploiting workers through digital sweatshops. Scale AI, a San Francisco-based company that provides data labeling and AI training services, relies heavily on outsourced laborers from around the world who work in poor conditions for minimal pay. These workers, often located in countries with weak labor protections, face grueling hours, unrealistic demands, little to no job security, and very little pay.

We, Stanford Students Against Digital Sweatshops, believe that it's time to take a stand against this exploitation. We call upon Scale AI to end its unethical practices and to treat all workers with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Why is this important?

  1. Exploitation of Labor: Scale AI's business model relies on the exploitation of vulnerable workers who are paid far less than a living wage. These workers are often subjected to intense workloads with little regard for their well-being. Some workers even report their pay being withheld, or even their complete termination prior to receiving paychecks for completed work.
  2. Lack of Transparency: Scale AI has failed to provide transparency regarding the working conditions and wages of its outsourced laborers. This lack of accountability allows the company to continue exploiting its workforce without public scrutiny.
  3. Ethical Responsibility: As a leading company in the AI industry, Scale AI has a responsibility to set an ethical standard for others to follow. Exploiting workers for profit is not only morally wrong but also undermines the principles of fairness and justice.
  4. Global Impact: The exploitation of workers by companies like Scale AI has a ripple effect that extends beyond the tech industry. It perpetuates cycles of poverty and inequality, affecting communities and economies around the world.

Our Demands:

We demand that Scale AI:

  1. Pay Fair Wages: Ensure that all workers, regardless of their location, receive fair compensation that meets or exceeds the living wage in their region.
  2. Improve Working Conditions: Provide a safe and healthy working environment for all employees and contractors. This includes reasonable work hours, access to necessary resources, and protections against exploitation.
  3. Transparency and Accountability: Publicly disclose labor practices, wages, and working conditions. Commit to regular audits and allow third-party organizations to monitor and report on labor practices.
  4. Worker Protections: Guarantee job security and benefits for all workers, including access to healthcare, paid leave, and the right to organize.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the rights of workers everywhere. Together, we can hold Scale AI accountable and push for a future where technology benefits everyone, not just the few. Join us in demanding fair treatment for all workers and an end to digital sweatshops.
