Hold Reckless Teen Drivers Accountable in Michigan — Enact Stronger Laws Now

The Issue

Too many lives in Michigan have been lost due to reckless driving by teen drivers. As young drivers get behind the wheel, they must understand that driving is a privilege—not a right—and it comes with serious responsibilities.

When teens speed, text while driving, or make reckless decisions that cause injuries or fatalities, there must be real consequences. Yet under current Michigan laws, many teens involved in serious or even deadly crashes face only limited penalties.

We’re calling on the Michigan Legislature to take action now.

We demand laws that will:

  • Increase penalties for reckless driving by individuals under age 18—especially in cases involving injury or death
  • Allow adult-level criminal charges for teen drivers who cause serious harm
  • Extend probationary license restrictions and increase enforcement for violations
  • Require mandatory traffic safety education for first-time teen offenders
  • Expand public education campaigns about the risks and consequences of reckless teen driving

This is not about punishing kids—it’s about protecting lives and preventing more heartbreak. Accountability saves lives. We owe it to the victims, their families, and the next generation of drivers to treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves.

Our son, Flynn MacKrell tragically lost his life in a car crash caused by the reckless driving of teenager Kiernan Tague. On the day of the incident, Tague picked Flynn up from his home, and within just five minutes, was driving at an alarming speed of 105 mph on a residential street where the speed limit was only 25 mph. The high-speed driving resulted in a devastating crash that killed Flynn, cutting short his life due to a completely preventable act of recklessness.
