On 12/23/22 Pedro Hernandez Perez, a legal asylee in the US, was confronted by police at his own home on several occasions for trying to keep his home's water pipes from bursting in the bitter cold that hit the northeast US.  Police know that Pedro is a native Spanish speaker and is very LEP, or limited English proficient.  Police never offered or got Pedro an interpreter.  As a matter of fact, at one point when Pedro's neighbors were screaming at him and violently pounding on his front door, Pedro called the police asking for help, and they hung up on him saying, "We don't speak Spanish."  Another time an officer responded and flat out denied Pedro an interpreter.  Pedro had to call a bilingual person to try to help him.  The officer proceeded to hand paperwork in English to Pedro and told him to fill out his own police report after a neighbor screamed at Pedro right in front of police for Pedro to go back to his country.  Later in the evening police came back yet again and spoke only with Pedro in English, denying him an interpreter.  He called a bilingual person again, but police would not speak to the person on the line.  Finally, police returned and arrested Pedro, and they still would not speak to him in Spanish to tell him what was going on in Spanish.  He continued to ask for an interpreter, and the police responded that he would get one once he went with them (in handcuffs).  All they did was call a Spanish speaker once they got in the car and tell him why he was arrested.

This brazen violation of Pedro's civil rights is outrageous not only for Pedro but for all people in the US who do not speak English as a first language. Any person who is not a native English speaker in this country should be scared that this could happen to him or her! The police cannot expect someone who does not speak English to understand exactly every detail of what is going on only by means of conversations in English.  As a reminder, in the US, there is no official language; people are free to speak what they like.  This particular police force does have Spanish-speaking officers.  Even if those officers were not on duty, it is the department's responsibility to obtain the help from another department or via a third-party interpreter service.

We need your help!  We need a good attorney who will help Pedro based on this blatant violation of his civil rights.  We need support from you to help us persuade a judge to drop charges against Pedro for the police force's outright refusal to provide Pedro with an interpreter from the very beginning.  We need to hold the police force accountable for discrimination against Pedro based on his language, his ethnicity, and his country of origin.

El 23/12/22, Pedro Hernández Pérez, un asilado legal en los Estados Unidos, fue confrontado por la policía en su propia casa en varias ocasiones por tratar de evitar que las tuberías de agua de su casa estallaran en el frío intenso que azotó el noreste de los Estados Unidos.  La policía sabe que Pedro es un hablante nativo de español y es muy DLI, o dominio limitado del inglés. La policía nunca le ofreció ni le consiguió a Pedro un intérprete.  De hecho, en un momento en que los vecinos de Pedro le gritaban y golpeaban violentamente la puerta de su casa, Pedro llamó a la policía pidiendo ayuda, y le colgaron diciendo: "No hablamos español".  En otra ocasión, un oficial respondió y le negó rotundamente a Pedro un intérprete. Pedro tuvo que llamar a una persona bilingüe para tratar de ayudarlo.  El oficial procedió a entregar documentos en inglés a Pedro y le dijo que llenara su propio informe policial después de que un vecino le gritó a Pedro justo en frente de la policía que Pedro regresara a su país.  Más tarde en la noche, la policía regresó una vez más y habló solo con Pedro en inglés, negándole un intérprete.  Volvió a llamar a una persona bilingüe, pero la policía no quiso hablar con la persona en la línea. Finalmente, la policía regresó y arrestó a Pedro, y todavía no quisieron hablar con él en español para decirle lo que estaba pasando en español.  Continuó pidiendo un intérprete, y la policía respondió que conseguiría uno una vez que fuera con ellos (esposado).  Lo unico que hicieron fue llamar a un hispanohablante una vez que subieron al auto y decirle por qué fue arrestado.

Esta descarada violación de los derechos civiles de Pedro es indignante no solo para Pedro sino para todas las personas en los Estados Unidos que no hablan inglés como primer idioma. ¡Cualquier persona que no sea un hablante nativo de inglés en este país debería tener miedo de que esto le pueda pasar a él o ella!  La policía no puede esperar que alguien que no habla inglés entienda exactamente cada detalle de lo que está sucediendo solo por medio de conversaciones en inglés.  Como recordatorio, en los Estados Unidos, no hay un idioma oficial; la gente es libre de hablar lo que quiera. Esta fuerza policial en particular tiene oficiales de habla hispana.  Incluso si esos oficiales no estaban de servicio, es responsabilidad del departamento obtener la ayuda de otro departamento o a través de un servicio de interpretación de terceros.

¡Necesitamos tu ayuda!  Necesitamos un buen abogado que ayude a Pedro en base a esta flagrante violación de sus derechos civiles.  Necesitamos tu apoyo para ayudarnos a persuadir a un juez para que retire los cargos contra Pedro por la negativa rotunda de la fuerza policial a proporcionarle un intérprete desde el principio.  Necesitamos responsabilizar a la fuerza policial por la discriminación contra Pedro basada en su idioma, su origen étnico y su país de origen.
