The Issue

On Sunday August 21, 2022 Paws Crossed Rescue was contact about several dogs who were possibly abandoned by their owner. Upon arriving to the location, a board member discovered a total of 11 dogs (8 puppies and 3 adults) severely emaciated and infested with ticks. The puppies were starved so severely, they were quite literally skin and bones. It was believed there were more animals trapped inside the home on the property so the Conecuh County Sheriff's Department in Castleberry, AL was contacted to come out and do a welfare check. Once officers (badge number 2106 and 2109) arrived they informed the board member that they could not perform a welfare check unless a family member calls to request one. They also said the condition of the animals was not their responsibility and said to call the District Attorneys office to report it. Once the DA was contacted, we were informed that it is not their responsibility, it was up to the Conecuh County Sheriff's Department to handle.

One of the many pups who were found

A photo along with the story of these poor animals was shared on social media.  Several people reached out and shared heartbreaking stories of what has happened to animals at this home by the owner, Cody Holland. He shoots dogs for sport, has strangled a pitbull momma after she gave birth to her puppies, and he currently has a warrant out for his arrest for beating up and hospitalizing a woman. Several reports have been made about Cody Holland but nothing has happened. Alabama Code 13a 11-14 clearly states a personal who commits an act of cruelty, recklessness and/or neglect against an animal is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by fine and/or imprisonment. It is the sworn duty of our law enforcement to uphold the law, serve and protect.

Dogs suffer and feel pain just like we do. Nearly 10 million animals are abused or killed every year in episodes of domestic violence.

Conecuh County Sheriff's Department needs to investigate reports of animal cruelty and abuse instead of turning a blind eye. It is their responsibility to protect the innocent. Conecuh County needs to uphold state laws regarding animal abuse and neglect and enforce them. Cody Holland needs to be charged with animal negligence, animal abuse and animal cruelty and brought to justice!

Please sign this petition to raise awareness and show Conecuh County Sheriff's Department that the people want to see changes. Change starts with us and it happens now!
